Lesson 3: ClimateWatch trail indigenous perspective

Indigenous Australians have long held their own seasonal calendars based on the local sequence of natural events. Many of the ClimateWatch species have traditional indigenous names, uses and stories.

What to do

Invite members of the local indigenous community and/or Indigenous education officers to share their knowledge of local plants and animals through a guided walk along your ClimateWatch trail.

During the walk take photos of what you see.

Activity ideas:

  • Back in the classroom make a table with following columns: Common Name, Scientific Name, Indigenous Name, Indigenous story or use, Photos.
  • Ask permission to share the names and information you learn. On your trail make signs with common name, scientific name, indigenous name.
  • Share the story of what you learn with ClimateWatch and be featured in the monthly enews. Contact Us to submit your story.
