Yanchep National Park is 42 km north of Perth. Its bushland and wetland are home to western gray kangaroos and diverse birdlife. Trails include a raised boardwalk among trees inhabited by koalas.

Yarra Bend Park is the largest area of natural bushland near the heart of Melbourne. The park features steep river escarpments, open woodlands, wild river escarpment, playing fields and golf courses. It is also a haven for native flora and fauna, with a total of 320 indigenous plant species recorded in the park. Animals found in the park include the platypus, water rat, bats, reptiles and diverse birdlife.

The Birrarung, or Yarra River, is a significant place for our First Nations people and is a key biodiversity corridor in our city, providing valuable habitat for plants and wildlife. The City of Stonnington acknowledges the Boonwurrung, Wurundjeri and Bunurong people as the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters of our city and we respect the special relationship of First Nations’ people to the land and water.

Fast growing deciduous tree that grows to 15 - 25 m tall.

Leaves

Long strips of small leaves 30 - 60 cm long.

Flowers

Bright yellow flowers with orange stamens that blossom from March to June and September to November.

Erect or spreading shrub that grows up to 1 m high. Young stems of the plant are covered in small hairs.

Leaves

Branches are crowded with leaves and are arranged in more or less opposite, linear pair. Leaves are small and cylindrical in shape 3 - 8 mm long and 0.5 mm wide. Leaves are green in colour and are covered in small white hairs.

Flowers

Arranged in groups of mostly 2 or 3 near the ends of the branches. The floral cup is hairy and 3 – 4 mm long. Petals are pale yellow, more or less round and about 1.5 mm long. There are 24 - 35 stamens (pollen-bearing organs) that protrude from the flower 3.5 – 4.5 mm long.

Dark grey-brown above with some brown streaking. It is paler below with lighter streaks and has a slightly down-curved bill. Young birds are paler.

Distinctive feature

A broad yellow facial stripe across its eye which is bordered with black.

The male is grey with a red bill, orange-tan cheeks and flanks. The flanks also have white spots. Its rump is white, and its tail is black with white bars. The female has a red bill, a black/white face and tail markings, and is otherwise grey.
